Heaven - Just A Fairy Story?

“There is no heaven or afterlife...that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” - Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking is a world renowned theoretical physicist who in an interview with The Guardian newspaper, stated that he finds no room for heaven in his vision of the cosmos.

There are several problems with Mr. Hawking’s flawed thinking.  The Bible gives us strong warning about considering ourselves to be more wise than the word of God.  “Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’ and again ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” (1 Corinthians 3:18-20)

Instead of looking to our own understanding when it comes to heaven, we must look to the word of God.

The next place Mr. Hawking could have looked to know there is in fact a God, is here on the beautiful earth He created.  “For what can be known about God is plain to them.  For His invisible attributes, namely His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.  So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20)   We can know there is a God by simply looking at His creation on which we live in each day of our lives.

And since we can know there is a God, we can also know there is a place called Heaven.  We should not expect it to be a place we can “find” with our own knowledge. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)  How can we be sure?

Simply, because His Son promised us a place called heaven in which we will be with God again someday.  “And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also.” (John 14:3)
